Perception gap – one market, two maps
Companies (4.6) and GIG Professionals (5.5) operate in the same market but see it differently. The challenge is not only to increase flexibility, but to align its perception on both sides.
Poland's first study on labour market flexibility. The fourth edition, which for the first time simultaneously shows the perspective of companies and independent professionals – GIG Professionals. A new dimension of analysis.
RESULTS SUMMARY
GIGbarometer 2026 measures labour market flexibility across three mutually complementary dimensions: Environment, Company and People.
For the first time we simultaneously compare the perspective of companies and GIG Professionals. Results show 5.5/10 on the GIG Professionals' side – higher than companies measuring the same market at 4.6/10. This perception gap says a great deal about the direction of change.
STRATEGIC INSIGHTS
This year's edition of GIGbarometer brings a fresh perspective on the labour market – it is not disappearing, but it is changing its shape. We have gathered the key relationships below – together they form a map of where we are and where we are heading.
Companies (4.6) and GIG Professionals (5.5) operate in the same market but see it differently. The challenge is not only to increase flexibility, but to align its perception on both sides.
GIG Professionals more often see growth (36%) and are more polarised than companies, where "no change" dominates (56%). The divergence of expectations will become apparent when new labour inspection regulations come into force.
Company index: 2.2 → 2.6 → 1.9 → 1.6. A second year of correction. 37% of companies do not use flexible forms at all. The model works, but its systemic significance is limited.
GIG Professionals choose B2B for positive reasons: flexibility (75%), autonomy (74%), better earnings (62%). Financial stability returns to 28–30% after the spike in 2025 (48%).
From 8 July 2026, labour inspectors gain expanded powers to challenge B2B contracts. 26% of companies view the reform negatively; 75% of GIG Professionals treat it as neutral background.
Flexible forms of cooperation are operationally effective and desired by both sides, but do not yet have a stable, coherent systemic framework. If regulatory pressure increases, tensions on both sides may surface.
33% of companies indicate that GIG Professionals always work at a set time, 31% – at a set location. The direction of the coming year will determine the future of hybrid models.
1.6 – actual share of flexible forms in companies.
7.2 – collaboration satisfaction, identical on both sides.
4.0 – GIG Professionals' perception of the share of flexible forms.
FOUR YEARS ON THE LABOUR MARKET
The GIGbarometer index for companies stood at 4.5 in 2023, reached a peak of 4.9 in 2024, slightly corrected to 4.8 in 2025 and stands at 4.6 in 2026. The market is moving out of a phase of dynamic growth and entering a phase of stabilisation.
In 2026 we measure the GIG Professionals' perspective for the first time – their result of 5.5 is higher than companies', revealing a perception gap within the same market.
* In 2026, for the first time results include the GIG Professionals' perspective

EXPERT OPINIONS
"GIG Professionals have stopped being a buffer for hard times and have become a permanent element of companies' operational models. The market is changing its character."
"Business security starts where a company can precisely name the difference between an employee and a GIG Professional and manage it responsibly."
"Because ultimately – whether at a polar expedition or at work – it's not just about reaching the goal. It's about not losing yourself along the way."
"The key to success is matching the employment model to the specifics of the business. Different forms of cooperation should be clearly and transparently defined – taking into account the rights and obligations of both parties."
"GIGbarometer 2026 marks a turning point: the market is leaving the adoption phase and entering the contractual phase – from flexibility as a choice to flexibility as a service."
"The key challenge for 2026 is to design cooperation models that protect companies while allowing GIG Professionals to retain genuine autonomy and the economic rationale for this form of work."
"The era of cheap flexibility is coming to an end in this market. Especially for companies that want to retain access to the best people."
"These data show no mass retreat from flexibility – rather a shift: some relationships will be better described and developed, some transferred or transformed into employment contracts, and some maintained under more careful standards."
"The GIG economy is inevitable. But the teams that will win are those able to effectively harness the full value of a hybrid organisation."
"The GIG model is entering a phase of maturity in which flexibility alone is no longer enough. The most enduring B2B relationships are no longer built solely on contracts, but on understanding why the collaboration exists and what results it should bring to both sides."
"Flexibility cannot be reversed. But one can learn to engage with it safely – to design the conscious coexistence of two worlds of work within a single organisation, rather than reducing them to a common denominator."
